The are daily flights to Belitung from Jakarta (CGK) on various budget airlines flying into the Tanjung Pandung (TJQ) airport which serves the island. When I last checked (August 2023) you could get a round-trip ticket from CGK to TJQ for a very reasonable 1,700,000 Rupiah (about $110). If you live in Jakarta, it’s a fairly inexpensive and quick weekend getaway compared to many other alternatives.
When you speak to foreigners about Indonesian vacation islands, everyone knows about Bali. But if you want sparkling waters, pristine beaches, and a pleasant tropical paradise, without the thick crowds of tourists you’ll find on Bali, then consider making the journey to Belitung. There aren’t many tourist attractions, and there are few amenities (I could only find one souvenir shop), but if you are looking for a peaceful retreat away from the hectic urban world, Belitung might be the place for you.
I stayed in a hotel on the beach. I spent most of my time walking on the beach and enjoying the sea. I chose to stay in the northwestern part of Belitung because of its proximity to dozens of cool little islands with their dramatic rock formations. With the assistance of the hotel staff, I chartered a boat and a guide who took me on an island-hopping tour. On one of the islands, I went hiking to the top of a cliff to witness a dramatic view. And I especially enjoyed stopping at Pulau Lengkuas to tour the impressive 61-meter tall Lengkuas Lighthouse, built by the Dutch in 1883.
If you want excitement and nightclubs and rubbing arms with legions of Australians, then fly to Bali. But if you want to hang out with Indonesians, and enjoy a simple, more-peaceful tropical paradise, then Belitung might be the place for you.
Fresh seafood is the culinary attraction in Belitung and there are dozens of rustic eateries along the beach, near populated villages, to choose from.
